Making the Most of your Time
When You Have None
Right now it’s 8:56 in the morning.
My daughter fell asleep 2 minutes ago and I stepped back slowly-
Gliding across a maze of:
- Toys (some of which start singing if you touch them)
- Empty Water bottles
- Wrapping paper
- Amazon boxes
- And other land mines
-to grab my laptop as silently as possible.
I may have an hour to write this.
(I may only have 6 1/2 minutes…)
In the four months since I’ve become a parent I’m learning this more and more:
My time is not truly my own.
Don’t get me wrong (I signed up for this)
And I absolutely love every day of being a father.
But (when I take a step back to look at my life) I’m:
- An adult
- With a full time job
- Employees under me who I’m responsible for
- With a wife (who is long suffering and amazing!)
- And a daughter (who we are now responsible to keep alive)
I’ve also reached a point in my life where I have decided that I want more than to work for someone else..
So I started creating.
It’s been an amazing journey and I’ve learned a lot so far.
But there is never enough time to do all that I want to do:
- To work on my newsletter
- To grow and nurture my X following
- To finish and release my course on growing an online following
(Which is coming very soon by the way!)
I see a lot of young creators online talk about setting plans for time management and ‘sticking to it like a G’.
(Which is admirable and I wish them the best in it)
But there are a lot of us with responsibilities beyond ourselves.
And our time is rarely our own.
But the lack of time to myself has also helped in a way-
I am now much more focused in the spare moments I am able to focus on my work.
Scarcity breeds value-
And I find that I am now able to accomplish 20-30 times what I could do before (when my free time was almost limitless).
I will continue to grow as a creator and learn to make the most out of my time.
If anything this is making me stronger.
Each day I’m becoming a better creator (and a better father).
On that note- It is now 9:21 and she's awake and calling for me.
Thanks for reading,
Brent
